Section 1: Establish Your Estate Plan Foundation
A will is the foundation of your whole estate plan.
It empowers someone you trust to handle everything when you're gone (called an executor, or a liquidator if you're in Quebec) and ensures your assets transfer to the right people, without unnecessary hassle or cost.
If you don’t have a valid will, legislation determines the default rules for allocating your estate assets – and chances are, it won’t be what you wanted.
Having a will gives you control, saves your loved ones stress, expense and delay and helps make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible.
What your will should include:
Names of your executor(s)/liquidator(s)
Instructions for asset distribution
Guardian for minor children (tutor in Quebec)
Funeral wishes
